SXSW – Inaugural Journey (part 2)

day 1 Tuesday, March 13th (continued)

….tycho.

jeremy loved this band and i certainly liked their recordings. i had to check them out.

in the small room, behind the funky bar with framed pics of old men and next to the taxidermied bear. trust was onstage.
a toronto duo. there were no spotlights on the stage. made it tough to ’see’ what they looked like. synth-pop, electronic stylings. packed place.

tycho came on at about 1130 pm. crowd thickened, believe it or not, and the music lovers feast was being satiated, kicking off sxsw ‘12 in style. the whole city was teeming and this was a microhit of the atmosphere. tycho is a 3-piece surf/trip/psychedelia band that you couldn’t see very well. strictly instrumental, they weaved superb melodies and soundscapes with cool footage of surf, sunsets and landscapes. enjoyed the show quite a lot. would have been superb if the room was outfitted with couches and chairs and everyone was lounging on top of each other…just hangin’ out.

i lost chris budd. he had stayed outside chatting with folks…and couldn’t get into the back room.
after the mohawk tavern…i think i left for the hotel. straight as an arrow, foggy memory.

shuttled back to my cave at about 2 am and crashed pretty hard. depending on when you get to the shuttle, you may have to get in line…which is amazing at 2 am….i guess clubbers wait in line for ages…we wait for a ride home.

day 2 Wednesday, March 14th

the next morning i rode into town with some guys i knew – avi federgreen, chris case and byron martin. we were dropped by chris downtown and the 3 of us hit up a resto/bar/pub at 1130 am with some live music starting at noon. ain’t no rest for the ears or the musicians. had some great food and walked to Waterloo Records, a superb music store with a great parking lot suited for outdoor shows. looked through the store for some local austin bands. oddly enough, the gent i spoke with who worked there didn’t really know of any local bands i should check out. i found that odd.

foxy shazam was going on at noon. i stayed around to watch the queen/spinal tap/darkness style band rock the crowd. unreal vox and great showmanship from all band mates. i love their song ‘unstoppable’ – some real epic fervor and excitement.

we’re at about 1 pm on wednesday, march 14th.

(to be continued….)

yes, i know. a little late. but you know what they say about late compared to never…

overture

2,000 bands. 300,000+ people expected to descend into Austin from march 9th-18th. interactive + film + music conferences held in the ‘live music city capital of the World’.

i had to go – after 20 years of working in the ‘music/entertainment’ business, i had never been. thanks to some prodding from avi federgreen and the generosity of jenn and her 2 kids (who were on spring break that week), i decided to take the plunge: i bought new running shoes. that was my symbol for this pilgrimage.

countless hours with the matrix schedule, deciding how to organize it all and who to connect with when down there. i really did feel like a virgin. SXSW-V i branded myself. but i was psyched.

day 1 – tuesday, march 13th

toronto – chicago – austin. arriving at 430 pm local time, i hopped a cab to my hotel. my motel-like, 2-star beauty was 15 minutes north of ‘the action’, on highway I-35. i bought a shuttle wristband for 70 bucks that allowed me to shuttle back and forth to downtown all day and night. the last ride out of town was at 3 am. i figured that was a good deal – as was the motel nightly: $40.00. thanks, chris case. very simple room, some semi-musty towel smell in the bathroom but clean and, well, i wasn’t going to spend many hours there – which meant i wasn’t going to enjoy the pool..;)

shuttle bound to downtown, i met avi and his crew at trinity house, at the corner of 6th street and trinity. so, it’s tuesday at about 6 pm…and the city is hoppin’. not a typical tuesday anywhere but a portent of things to come. beautiful wooden interior – a 20-foot ceiling in the main floor bar – and, up the stairs, is a wicked venue with an outdoor patio that run the length of the bar on the trinity street (north-south) side. canada house clams this spot for the music conference and it becomes a hub and oasis in the midst of the true craziness that is sxsw.

after a beer (an $8.00 beer that was $4.00 a few days prior), we went across the street for some mexican style food. satiated, i went to claim my badge in the convention centre that resembles a massive rectangular spaceship. it’s just huge. there was not much of a line up at 845 pm and got my badge within minutes.

pause for a moment.

the # of volunteers and well, people, everywhere was astounding at this early part of the music conference…it’s first ‘night’. there was no less than 25 people at registration waiting to help you and more than 50 behind them in support. people were teeming along the streets, badges proudly worn like medals and every style and colour of shoe you can imagine on display – and heels. my nikes were getting worn in nicely, already. The city’s population is 919,000 according to my googling and i wonder what they think of this invasion every march. 12,000 – 18,000 registrants every year for all 3 fests that run quasi-concurrently. and then you have music lovers, the bands, 2,000 of them, and so many visitors fro everywhere.

i met up with chris budd (indiemusicfilter.com) and we mosied over to The Mohawk – indoor and outdoor venue. the outdoor venue boasts a 2-and-a-half story outdoor balcony. amazing venue…just its size and its concept. quite big and basically 4 blocks from the heavy action of clubs upon clubs that line 6th street. i wanted to see tycho perform.

(to be continued….)

Amoeba Records. Heaven on earth for music folks. Playland of sorts. Browse city.

I have been in 3 or 4 times but this time, I just stayed. For 2 hours. It didn’t matter if I was going to buy any music (which I did) or if I thought 8-tracks would be some fun nostalgia to peruse (and bought 2 of those) or if I looked for a while until I found (or didn’t find) many Degrassi VHS/DVD’s (and I did find).

I only wanted to be surrounded by music and movies and TV shows and, and, and…: old and new, punk and classical, pop and hip hop, classic films (I bought Fellini’s ‘400 Blows’), t-shirts, stickers, vinyl and everything in between and beyond. Like a Linus’ blanket, or your favourite sweatshirt or shoes or friends, it’s a place of comfort and warmth and wickedness.

I did buy some vinyl. Of course.

The Best of Genesis – Genesis (1976 Buddah Records)
4 Way Street – CSNY (1971 Atlantic Records)
The Blind Leading The Naked – Violent Femmes (1986 Slash Records, distrib. by Warner Bros. Records)
Secret Combination – Randy Crawford (1981 Warner Bros. Records)
Skylarking – XTC (1986 Geffen) *wore my cassette out In The Beginning – Genesis (1977 London records.)
Sunday at the Village Vanguard – Bill Evans Trio (1961 distrib. by Fantasy Inc.)
Origin Of Symmetry – Muse (2009 Warner Bros. Records)

I guess it’s like IKEA or a candy store: you may go into peruse but you will always buy something – or at least more than you thought you were to initially buy. I still have not found the Prince song ‘How Come You Don’t Call Me Anymore?’ on vinyl. Been looking in every shop I go in. I think it’s on vinyl somewhere…if anyone knows, let me know.

So, 2 hours of my life in the store. Just not enough time to take it in. Like a bright morning day without sunglasses, you have to get used to the sheer massiveness of the store and plan your attack on the layout. There are so many colours, sizes, shapes, stuff and bins, bins, bins, racks, racks, racks of music etc. I found 4 boxes of 8-track tapes and just piled through them and grabbed 2 for the office: Willie Nelson’s “Red Headed Stranger” (1975) and The Grateful Dead’s “Live/Dead” (1969) (which happens to be the 1st official live album release by The Dead)

Almost satiated from drinking up the music elixir of Amoeba, I headed out to an interesting ‘dinner theatre’ evening at The Barre where my buddy Don and I watched a musical revue of Baz Luhrman movie soundtracks called “For The Record” featuring songs from ‘Romeo + Juliet’, ‘Strictly Ballroom’ and ‘Moulin Rouge’. Good fun and well, you really see the genius of Baz and how he tells his stories through songs. One of those moments (which I have had before with Baz’s art) where you wish you came up with that idea.

Jon Brion.

The next night, Friday night, was my last night in LA. The weather had been amazing, the miles on the car were piling up behind me and the notion that I needed to come back more than once every year solidified. Once in 3 years is not enough and I didn’t get to see some people and do some things that I wanted to. Again, a beautiful day in Los Angeles and met my friend Morgan Doctor in Woodland Hills for some Jerry’s breakfast, outside. I believe that to see your friends or colleagues from Toronto, you have to travel somewhere else to ensure you can/will. Spent some time roaming around CityWalk (yep, touristy but kids’ gifts needed buying) and then hit Melrose for a bit.

I was privileged to have been invited to Bob Hunka’s for dinner before the Jon Brion show and had a superb dinner with Boob, Franny (his wife) and the superbly cool Consul General, David Fransen. Adorned in his Leonard Cohen t-shirt, David came into Bob’s eclectic, warm as a blanket house and was rarin’ to go. Some beers and Hunkaritas later,
I had to push off for the Brion show at Largo on La Cienega.

I had bought tickets about a month prior to my trip – ok – 6 weeks – as I had heard about his legendary performances.

Best show I have seen in years. I think I have said that a few times. But, this was like no other solo performance I have ever seen. Instruments set up on the stage, MICS, great open-frame piano, 9 guitars, xylophone (big one) and other things…

You felt like you were in his recording studio or living room – I gather it’s one in the same for him. He plays guitar effortlessly. He plays piano as if it’s an appendage…but not an extra one…a natural one. His singing is sincere and has cool tone. He played 4-5 instruments, 3-5 guitars, did many covers with extra-cool arrangements, took suggestions from the audience, bantered with wit and charm throughout and mesmerized everyone at every note and in every second.

Again, how can you dance about architecture? You just have to experience it and feel it. I wonder how many times some of those people had come to see him at Largo where he plays often. Almost like a session for him with no pressure – though there would seem to be playing in front of a crowd who hangs on every 1/4 note. Thank you Jon Brion and I hope you can come to Toronto with that exact set-up.

The red-eye flight back home wasn’t so bad – a stop in Charlotte for 3 hours and out of Canadian customs by 11:10 am was perfect. Again, 1st class, and thankful for that.

It was a unique 10-days experience. 6 flights, a few stop-overs, great people, superb artistry, diametrically opposed weather within 48 hours, various culture grabs, personal and professional excitement on many fronts and of course, coming home. I love being away but I love my city, its people, our way of life, my newfound family and my surroundings.

Thanks for reading – if you did read all the blogs. I enjoyed writing them – it will remind me of my January when December rolls around. And if you only read this one, thanks for that…means someone is ‘listening’.

Michael.

February 8, 2012

On to the City of Lost Angels. I’ve been at least a dozen times and it still impresses.

Monday morning, January 23rd – another sunny, crisp morning en route to Salt Lake City International for flight to Phoenix and then to Los Angeles. As I booked on points, and because they only had certain flights available, I was settled in First Class. Lots of points.

Everyone who likes traveling (or maybe moreseo, those who don’t like flying) should try First Class. Like sitting in your favourite chair at home with a window to the skies and heavens.

Mountains and sun were both shining as we headed out. I arrived in LA in late afternoon and crawled on the 405 to the Valley where I was staying. I still marveled at the sun, the cars, the people, the sheer massiveness of the map and the thoughts of what happens in this city at any moment in every hour of this city’s life. Its lifeforce is different than Manhattan but its action is as powerful, daunting and spectacular.

It’s not difficult to find your way around the city – but the drives between anywhere are 25-55 minutes depending on traffic. So, patience and good music are your guides.

Mahler.

I had been invited to see Mahler’s 3rd Symphony by Bob Hunka (legendary Bob Hunka) at the spectacular Disney Concert Hall. Regardless of your opinions of Mr. Disney, this Frank Gehry creation is nothing short or breathtaking inside and out (save the upholstery on the seats – but there is a reason for that). Gustavo Dudamel, the genius conductor of the LA Philharmonic – the wunderkid from Venezuela (who just celebrated his 31st birthday) – was conducting BY WROTE, all 9 of Mahler’s Symphonies. Tonight, he was conducting the Simon Bolivar Orchestra, the magical and heartwarming symphony from ‘El Sistema’. Oh, and in addition to the 100 plus musicians onstage there were two choral groups numbering 100+.

It’s a 90-minute symphony straight up – no intermission. I forgot to breathe during the first movement that clocked in at 24 minutes or so. Just as you can’t dance about architecture, the English language skills that I possess cannot properly give due praise and express wonderment at this unique, live music event. The movements weaved in and out of hope and despair and beauty and sadness. The eight and a half-minute standing ovation was something to behold. I recommend reading about The Mahler Project. It just finished up after a month+ ‘residency’ at the Hall. I hope we can do something this magnificent in Toronto. To think about these classical composers writing these intricate note patterns coupled with extraordinary arrangements, filled with emotion, bravado and unending feeling, is sheer unfathomable. I cannot wrap my head or heart around it. It is bigger than our universe and surely this talent is innate in some way in their DNA. It feels other-worldly – these musical anomalies. I like classical music. I said it.

Opened a beautiful bottle of Don Julio 1942 tequila afterwards and though hating tequila, the mess went down smoothly. It was a spectacular evening…a unique experience I won’t ever forget. I never wanted it to end. You know that feeling? I thought so.

That Tuesday and Wednesday were filled with meeting folks and criss-crossing the expansive LA, West Hollywood, Calabasas, Culver City, Santa Monica etc. etc. Oh, and of course, I had to rent a Ford Focus…my new friend and trusted 4 wheeler. And this time, it was neon-like green. Bitchin. A magnet of all kinds.

On Thursday, I was able to spend some time at my favourite playground – Amoeba Records on Sunset Blvd. 2 hours of time. More on that and Jon Brion later.

To be continued….

February 3, 2012

Mega beautiful storm on Saturday dropped about 4 feet of snow. It was beautiful. Sunday morning came and, well, a while different kind of beautiful: Blue skies and sun. Quite an extraordinary change but welcome by all.

Skiiers must have felt like they were in ski heaven. After busting up my knee, 16+ years ago, I haven’t skied. I felt silly that I couldn’t/didn’t. Got to strengthen myself.

I drove into Park City to see some more music at the ASCAP Music Café and hopefully meet 2 or 3 colleagues from Los Angeles. The drive was beautiful…clear and crisp and the road were 100% dry…that’s some serious commitment to Tourism. We could take a hint from this organization…though we have been lucky so far this year. Of course, I had to stop in at the local Arby’s for a quick snack.

The town was slushy and sunny…happy people everywhere. Maybe some hungover folks but sunglasses did a great job at hiding any of those signs.

I stopped in to some storefront/market where artisans and retail folks were plying their trades. You could get some cool, Japanese flavoured, Feng Shui art from Brooklyn, NY’s, John Hung Ha (though it’s not yet on his site!) or chat with custom clothier ‘elevee’ about their custom-made golf pants (costly I gather) + custom-made suits for athletes and other celebs…for $2,000+ (I bought 3 suits and 6 pairs of golf pants).

At the Café, I saw a couple of acts: Jenny O. again and John Nail who was superb…great songwriter and great presence onstage. Laid back and passionate.

I walked around the town a bit, checking out some shops, watching people ski. Bummer. All my meetings did not happen – maybe that is part of what happened at Sundance but I was looking forward to meeting some folks who I had never met.

I stumbled upon another storefront that was taken over by the NY Film Commission. Some songwriters were playing there and one gal, Julia Nunes, who was to be on the Conan show two days later. Charming and fun, playing a uke of sorts etc. with a member of her band accompanying her on guitar (check it out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ymdbaCCYd0&feature=related). NFL Playoff games were on and off as the Giants were about to play…I bumped into a gent who was there to Spike Lee’s movie that evening. Alex worked with Spike who directed some commercials. If you are out there, contact me, Alex. Funny, cool cat in bowtie. Guess he was giving respect to Spike .

I trust Spike wasn’t too happy that his film was premiering in the middle of the Giants playoff game so maybe that’s why he went ‘off’ during the Q & A.

The evening and night were quiet. No mega news to report. Yep, at Sundance and not partying hard. I was pretty satiated by the weekend and getting the feel of Sundance. I hope to come back often with or without films I worked on in the Fest. It’s a superbly cool community and friendly folks all around. Next time I’ll ski.

To be continued…

February 1, 2011.

It takes all the spokes in a wheel to make it turn and thus create energy, motion and “success”. Making a film is a prime example of this truism.

In December 2011, director Nicholas Jarecki told me “Arbitrage” was accepted into the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. So his next journey with the film began – and so did mine. I had to go.

I hadn’t spoken to Nick in 5 years. I worked on a documentary about the film director James Toback called “The Outsider” with Nick. But, again, 5 years ago.

In late September 2011, I received an email from Nick asking if I was still “around”. Luckily, I was. I called him upon my return from Halifax and was humbled that he remembered me and was asked if I could music supervise his film. We had about 8 – 10 weeks.

So there I was at YYZ (Toronto) awaiting the next leg of my journey to begin.

Hearing a flight to Houston was cancelled made me jump out of my chair but I realized soon thereafter that it was a later flight that wouldn’t be taking off.

Though I would have a 3-hour layover in Houston before landing in Salt Lake City, I didn’t want to be subject to flight issues. Yep, I wanted things to go smoothly.

Finally landing in SLC at 11:30 pm, I jumped in my hot, neon, blue Ford Focus and drove – through darkness, some light rain and beautifully white outlined mountaintops that the moon illuminated – to Heber City. About an hour drive. After settling in, I was a tad excited and fell in a half-sleep mode for about 6 hours. Door to door, I had been traveling for 14 hours. I was restless, excited and filled with anticipation.

I awoke to rain but by the time I left door for my 22-mile drive into Park City, the snow was falling hard. And it did for 14 hours.

I was re-routed after 10 minutes and drove on blowy, snowy roads for an extra 40 mins. That car made it through horrible conditions and I thank it: nothing was going to stop me from getting into Park City – thanks Ford.

The town is a beaut and filled with whiteness, what you would expect. They had over 700 inches of snow last year. But only 40-50 so far this year. The snow was blowing sideways, straight at the windshield, like a hyperspace graphic in Star Wars.

I hit the ASCAP Music Cafe, on Main Street, where I was meeting Jian Ghomeshi, host of the superb CBC arts show ‘Q’. Performers I saw included A Fine Frenzy , Josh Kelley, Jenny O. and John Forte w/ an appearance by Natasha Bedingfield. The Cafe was well attended – some real talented writers/performers. It made me long for the Canadian Music Cafe set up we had for 2 years at TIFF.

Shuttle time to the Eccles Theatre. I slushed my way to the platform where many buses take you to various places throughout the town. They were running waaaay behind. After a 40-minute wait, we piled onto a bus and crawled to the Theatre.

I had been excited all day. It was to be a highlight in my career as a Music Supervisor. I was proud of the movie and felt privileged to be there. I’m not much of a self-promoter and rarely pat myself on the back, but this was good shit.

Arriving at the 1300 seat theatre – on a high school “campus” no less – I watched Richard Gere walk into the theatre 2 feet from me. Fun stuff.

Jian was late (not his fault for any cynical ones out there!) so I went into the theatre to a packed house and found 2 seats in the front row of the balcony. Luck? Hmmmm.

The theatre was buzzing and I was nervous – you woulda thought I made the film or had some serious skin in the game. The NY Times had pegged it as one of the buzz films of the Fest. F*#k Yeah!

Nick intro’ed the film and we were off.

Sheer pleasure. Superb response and great reactions at the ‘right’ moments!! A crowd pleaser. Cliff Martinez’s score was superb – soundscape tension and drama that was bang on every scene of the way. What a thrilling ride – I was psyched for Nick. He was over the moon.

After the Q & A with four of the actors and Nick, Jian and I took a shuttle to the Blue Room on Main Street for a dinner bash.

A very casual affair – no one is dressed up – everyone is in sweaters and boots and big ass coats. A whole different world than TIFF. A small table of food and loads of vodka – thx Grey Goose. After 3 hours or so, Jian and I met up with Alicen from A Fine Frenzy and finished the nite with virgin drinks – they ran out of booze. (truth be told, we initially tried to get into the Drake show at a bar but even the guest list didn’t help us – they were already at capacity at midnight).

1:15 am. – home to Heber City. Dark drive in blowing snow. It just never let up.

It was only 2 plus months of furious song searches and negotiations. I loved mostly every minute of it at any hour of the day, night or laaaaate night/early morning. It certainly is the highest profile film I have worked on.

The process is sometimes more important than the end result – the learning, the challenges you encounter, the degree to which you push yourself, the degree to which your director pushes you (and his vision that you want to realize) and, of course, the team you work with. All done via phone and email! Maybe we can move to St. Kitts – doesn’t matter where you are…

It was a unique experience and thrilled that I was a spoke in this wheel.

to be continued….

welcome to the new year. 2012. how did THIS happen?

i remember when the beginning of the ’school’ year felt like my new year after i had come back from summer camp and i had to switch my mind and heart into school mode, a sharp 180 from 8 weeks of summer bliss.

the year awaits challenges and nuances for everyone. i have not made nye resolutions in ages because they have become empty promises. expectations like those are, as a friend puts it, premeditated disappointments.

but i am looking forward to the world that awaits and the world that we can create through travel, friendships, work, ambition, team play, humanity and good humour.

music in 2012 will take another leap forward with the continual DIY attitude, creative marketing and constant touring. rock ‘n roll will make a comeback in the next 18 months. foo fighter rock. stones rock. let’s get behind the artists that are in it for the long haul. artists who are not needing that #1 single with flash and glitz. it’s the guy or gal who share their hearts and souls with you (and for you) inside their stanzas of prose. adele. bon iver. city and colour.

may everyone kick ass this year in whatever fashion they need to.
be passionate about your days – work and play – and i hope to cross paths with all of you.

i was in winnipeg giving a workshop on music supervision for some local filmmakers, composers etc. superb fun and a smart group of people. talkative, inquisitive and hungry to create. it’s amazing to see a new crop of creators eager to learn (even from me !) and get charged myself from their enthusiasm. i believe canadians see huge opportunities no matter how high the mountain and how jagged the climb.

i was at the musical box concert – a Genesis theatrical tribute band. they performed the lamb lies down on broadway with full slide show from 1974 and with extraordinary musical precision. the musicianship and vocal performance were quite astounding and even if you are not a big Genesis fan, you will marvel minute by minute at the skills these guyslay down.

i was in Montreal for M for Montreal – a music conference focusing more on live shows than conference. some superb bands and the weather was great. visit Montreal whenever you can. it’s a joyful city with multi cultured neighbourhoods and a superb music scene. some highlights for me included Half Moon Run, Bobby Bazini and Parlovr.

and i attended a one-day conference called Music Makes It in Toronto that brings together the music and film/tv/video/mobile game industries to connect, chit chat and learn from each other. always a great event, hosted by NXNE Music Festival and OMDC. it’s an integral meeting of the minds for Ontario companies to know each other and work together. anything to create a strong foundation for our cultural industries…that’s the bottom line.

enjoy the shopping for Hannu-Mas.

people. love ‘em or hate ‘em, sometimes we just have to tell them what we think.

i love the idea of communication and reciprocal respect.

many times in business and sometimes (many times…ok) in our personal life, we don’t answer questions asked or even hear back from someone for weeks…even after repeated notes, calls, flares, bat signals. we are all busy with so much in our multi tasking lives but there needs to be some type of ‘24′ hour response. even if you don’t have a specific answer to a query…at least let someone know you’re working on it or there is a delay for a reason or…lie. something that will communicate something to the other party.

creating a ghost-like atmosphere between the parties is frustrating and somewhat rude. and if someone does ask a question, it’d be great for it to be answered….and not glossed over politician style…;).

we must understand the value of working and playing together and creating that mutual faith and trust in each other so we can continue the relationships in a meaningful way.

maybe it’s easier for us to not to answer for fear of disappointment or disagreements but this is all part of our world and part of how we learn in life.

let’s create better communication. we will all be better for it!
